Having a substance use issue can lead to many unwanted consequences. Substance use issues can range from problem use to full addiction. There is no specific amount associated with problem use. There are some characteristics that may hint you have a problem with your substance use. Some of these characteristics are:

  • Taking the substance in larger amounts over a longer period of time then you intended
  • There is a constant desire or unsuccessful attempts to cut down or control substance use
  • Spending a large amount of time doing activities having to do with the substance use
  • Having urges to use the substance
  • Failing to complete what you need to do at home, work, or school because of the substance use
  • Continuing to use the substance despite having problems caused by it
  • Giving up or reducing important parts of your life to use the substance
  • Putting yourself in situations that are dangerous because of the substance use
  • Having to use more of the substance then in the past to reach the desired effect
  • Feeling physically or mentally bad when you stop using the substance
